My Board experience as Treasurer & Green Officer

Board Blog: Milo van den Dool

Hey everyone! I am Milo van den Dool, the Treasurer & Green Officer of this year's TeMa Board. Besides working on the financial and sustainability topics of TeMa, I am also working on finishing my bachelor's degree. Before my Board year, I was already familiar with TeMa and organized amazing events with my committee members in the Sustainability Event Committee. I enjoyed everything TeMa had to offer, from the fun social activities to the interesting career events. Because of this, I wanted to expand my TeMa career even further by doing a Board year, something I still enjoy and will never regret, not even for a single day!

What my week looks like

Every week, from Monday to Thursday, we are in our own hok (office), which is located in the interim that we share with several other FEB study associations. This is always great fun because, besides the hard work, everybody is up for a laugh or a quick chat. Besides the talking, there are a lot of different tasks a Treasurer of TeMa needs to do during the workday. After the workday ends, the evenings are most often scheduled with fun activities. We often have mixes with committees or other boards, or we attend activities or socials from other associations. Something extra special is the constitution drinks, which you can only truly understand if you’ve experienced it yourself! For me, the week strikes a perfect balance between casual and professional activities.

What my daily tasks are

As Treasurer, I’m responsible for controlling the flow of money coming into and going out of the association. This is done through an accounting system (Exact Online). It’s my duty to ensure that earnings are well-spent and that all the money is being secured. Besides the administrative tasks, there are many other aspects involved in the role of Treasurer.

Throughout the week, I have several meetings with treasurers of the TeMa committees to check their progress and ensure that budgets are being followed. After committee events take place, the real work of a Treasurer begins. I work with the committee treasurer to make sure that all earnings and costs are recorded and balanced to reflect the event’s financial outcome.

The great thing about being a Treasurer is that you can mostly schedule your tasks yourself, which allows for a perfect balance of activities throughout the day.

In addition to my role as Treasurer, I also serve as the Green Officer, which adds an extra dimension to my work. I’m responsible for ensuring that, alongside managing cash flow, our three main sustainability focus points (sustainability, mental health, and inclusivity) are maintained and improved. This is done by executing the Sustainability Roadmap and finding creative ways with the Board to improve sustainability.

My experience so far

I greatly enjoy being this year's Treasurer because of the immense personal and professional growth I’ve experienced. I’ve had the chance to meet many new people and gain insight into my future career. Besides the formal activities, I really enjoy the amazing evenings filled with wonderful events, from the great constitutional drinks to the exciting mixes with committees and different boards.

If you’re in doubt about joining, I can honestly say this might be the best year of your student life!
