Board Blog: Sam Koster
Hello everyone! My name is Sam Koster, and I am this year’s Internal Relations and Education & Vice-Chair. Before moving to Groningen, I studied in Zwolle, where I completed my BSc in Industrial Engineering & Management. However, I felt I missed out on the full student experience, so I decided to move to Groningen and enrol in the Pre-MSc programme in TOM & SCM.
I became involved with TeMa during my Pre-MSc year by joining the Sustainability Event Committee. I enjoyed my time with TeMa, which inspired me to apply for the Board. In this blog, I’ll share what my weeks typically look like, my daily responsibilities, and my experience so far.
What my week looks like
My week kicks off with a Board meeting where we discuss various topics, including committee updates, our policy, and upcoming decisions. Throughout the week, I spend most of my time meeting with committees. For example, I recently evaluated the Cocktail Workshop with the Master Committee and discussed the event’s outcomes.
I also have plenty of coffee meetings with members interested in joining a committee, one of my favourite parts of the role, as it gives me the chance to connect with new people. Another common activity involves meeting with Year Representatives, who provide feedback on TeMa’s portfolio management. This makes every week unique, which I thoroughly enjoy as it keeps things exciting!
Evenings often include activities, whether organised by TeMa or other study associations. We also have “constitutional drinks” now and then, an informal way of meeting other boards. Outside of TeMa, I make time for sports. I usually hit the gym twice a week and play football on Wednesday evenings. On Fridays, I work as an Assistant Maintenance Engineer at FrieslandCampina, in a factory near Groningen, alongside other students. On the weekends, I often visit my parents, catch up with friends, and relax.
What my daily tasks are
As Internal Relations and Education, my role involves recruiting new members, guiding committees, organising activities for active members, and providing study support.
There are three recruitment periods each year when students can join TeMa committees. During these times, my main task is to encourage students to get involved and inform them about the opportunities available. After recruitment, I conduct interviews and compose the committees. Once the committees are formed, I regularly meet with them to monitor progress and discuss their developments.
As the contact person for most committees, I work closely with a wide range of people, which makes the role very sociable. If you’re someone who enjoys meeting new people and working collaboratively, this position is perfect for you! Another aspect of my role involves education. I’m responsible for maintaining the quality of study materials, such as the summaries on the TeMa website, and ensuring that new courses are included. Members can also approach me with complaints about their studies or specific courses. TeMa uses this feedback to communicate with the department, helping improve the overall quality of education.
Additionally, as Vice-Chair, I support the Chair by attending monthly meetings to evaluate policy progress and strategic matters. I also step in for the Chair when she is unavailable. An important part of this role involves attending bi-monthly meetings with the Department of Operations.
My experience so far
I can recommend doing a Board year to everyone! It’s an incredible opportunity to build your network, develop new skills, and step out of your comfort zone. Unlike university courses, a Board year challenges you in practical and dynamic ways.
The experience and knowledge you gain are invaluable for your future career. For anyone eager to learn, grow, and take on a challenge, I highly recommend applying for the Board of 2025-2026 , especially for the Internal Relations and Education position!
