TOM & SCM alumni - Mick Jager

What academic program are you currently pursuing, and why did you choose this specific master's program in Groningen?

“I am currently working on my thesis for both the Masters in Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Technology Operations Management (TOM). The main motivation for choosing these masters came from my interest in operational efficiency and optimization. Based on my experience during the minor SCM at Wageningen, I was convinced that I wanted to start with a master in that field of operation. However, my undergraduate studies also revealed a desire to delve into courses that demand more technical thinking and the acquisition of new data analytics-skills, which is more in line with the TOM master. The dual opportunity in Groningen to pursue both masters aligned perfectly with my aspirations. I consider myself a generalist, and this characteristic seamlessly fits into the curriculum of both masters. However, other aspects such as experiencing newness is something valuable for me. I enjoy that both the city of Groningen and the courses that I took were new to me.”

What was your field of study prior to pursuing this master's degree?

“I completed my bachelor's degree in Food Commerce & Technology at the University of Applied Sciences Inholland in Amsterdam. Despite its technical-sounding name, the program primarily focused on adjusting food products based on customer demand. Subsequently, I enrolled in the pre-MSc TOM program at Groningen.”

To what extent do your expectations align with your experiences so far in the program, and do you feel that the courses align well with the intended learning objectives?

“From my perspective, the majority of the courses are meeting my expectations. While some are more exciting or valuable than others, the overall program experience aligns with what I anticipated.”

How do you perceive the relevance of the courses to your future career, and do you believe the program aligns effectively with the demands of the job market?

“That’s difficult to say since I have not experienced it myself yet. However, conversations with potential employers and alumni have provided insights. The consensus among them is that they have faced situations similar to those addressed in some courses. Furthermore, these professionals also emphasize the relevance of technical skills acquired during the masters, such as programming and simulation skills, in the supply chain and operations work field.”
