Board Blog: Oscar Lucas
Hey everyone! My name is Oscar Lucas, and I am the Secretary & Promotion and Green Officer of this year’s TeMa Board! I am 25 years old and last February I started my Master’s in Technology & Operations Management. In 2024 I moved to Groningen while I was following the Pre-MSc program in Technology & Operations management. During this time, I wanted to meet new people as I was in a whole new environment, and joining TeMa helped me a lot in doing just that! From the first social I joined, I felt welcome in the community as everyone was very friendly and interested in who I was and what I was doing. It was very nice to join an association with a welcoming culture and like-minded people. Adding the exciting activities that TeMa organises, made me decide to do a Board year and take on the challenge to run the association with a group of people that are now a few of my closest friends!
What my week looks like
From Monday to Thursday, you can find me at our Hok, working on my to-do’s while having a chat with our members and the Boards of other study associations. On Monday and Thursday mornings, we have our Board meetings until around 12:00. During these meetings, I take the minutes, ensure the important points are highlighted, and set up the to-do’s for each Board member. The rest of the week, I have a lot of freedom to work through my to-do list. We also always eat lunch together around 12:00, often joined by many of our members!
In the evenings, we often have events, sometimes organised by us and sometimes by other (study) associations. We also frequently enjoy a fun evening with one of our committees or even with multiple committees, during a so-called megamix! Additionally, we sometimes mix with the Boards of other (study) associations. These activities make a Board year even more exciting, as you get to meet a lot of different people!
If we don’t have anything planned in the evening, I like to spend time with my girlfriend or my roommates doing something fun or just relax and take some time for myself. Happily, this is still possible during my Board year. I also work at Koninklijke Euroma on Fridays as a Warehouse Administrator, as we are not at our Hok on this day.
What my daily tasks are
This function offers a lot of variety, making it an interesting and enriching experience throughout the year. As the name of the function suggests, I am responsible for the promotion of the association. This includes, among other things, creating Instagram posts and stories, as well as LinkedIn posts. In my role as Secretary, I take minutes during meetings and manage all incoming and outgoing communication for the association. In addition, I am in charge of updating the website, writing the monthly newsletter, overseeing the annual planning, and guiding the PRs of the committees, as well as the Marketing Committee. Together with the Internal Relations & Education Officer, I am also responsible for the publication of our TeMagazine!
In addition to my role as Secretary & Promotion Officer, I also serve as the Green Officer, which adds an extra dimension to my work. I ensure that our three main sustainability focus points (sustainability, mental health, and inclusivity) are maintained and improved. This is done by executing the Sustainability Roadmap and finding creative ways with the Board to improve sustainability.
My experience so far
So far, this Board year has been a great experience for me! I have met a lot of new people, had opportunities to network, and learned so much, not only within my own role but also beyond it, things I could never have learned from my studies alone. This experience has helped me grow both professionally and socially.
I have also built lifelong friendships with my fellow Board members. Working so closely together has created a strong bond, and I know I can always count on them. I highly recommend this experience to all of you!
